About Briefbox

About Briefbox

Briefbox is a community of like-minded creatives working together on one common goal; to go further in design. We help support this with our unique library of practice briefs, weekly live sessions and a quarterly bootcamp led by practising industry professionals.


Briefbox was created in 2016 by Joel Rosen, the founding partner of top UK brand agency; ORCA as a side project turned success story. After receiving hundreds of job applications to the agency it became difficult to spot emerging talent without any commercial experience and so Briefbox was born.


Nowadays Briefbox has evolved into more than just the briefs; a thriving community and an industry respected graphic design course that delivers a top notch multi-disciplinary bootcamp over an 8 week period.

Why Briefbox exists & our journey

How it
all began

  • 2016

    Just 2 years into running UK brand agency ORCA, job requests swamp the inbox. With little time to connect to each applicant individually for assessment the first set of ‘practice briefs’ was created. The mission; give those without any commercial experience an opportunity to showcase what they could do given the chance.

  • 2017

    In under 12 months, Briefbox being the first of its kind; a library of free practice briefs gained much attention in the industry. The platform got noticed by reputable design figures and got featured by Creative Bloq, Smashing Magazine, Design Taxi, Paste Magazine, Hey Designer & more.

  • 2018

    After realising there was a clear need for an accessible library of practice briefs, the team at ORCA decide to take things to the next level and invest 25% of their studio time to the platform. Re-purposing client projects and slowly working on improvements to the platform, Briefbox was beginning to take shape… but it needed more work to realise it's true potential.

  • 2019

    6 months later and after plenty of late nights Briefbox 2.0 was launched with an upgraded offering to help designers even further. This version of Briefbox included a community focused offering where designers could like and follow each other’s work and submit their take on some of the projects whilst building their portfolio at the same time.

  • 2020

    Soon after launching 2.0 and many conversations with our community later, we realised people wanted more than just the briefs, they wanted feedback on their work and help to actually complete the projects. Offering professional feedback with access to our team of practising industry professionals was clearly needed.

  • 2021

    In less than 12 months since the 2nd version of Briefbox was launched we went back to the drawing board and began working on the next version of Briefbox. The goal was to put more of a focus on community support, mentoring and a better way for those completing the briefs to get helpful access to a mentor.

  • 2022

    A new offering including mentoring was launched. The format for the mentoring was video based meaning emerging talent could submit their work and one of our mentors would respond with a video offering honest critique. This was received well however we were still missing a few tricks: 1-2-1 direct mentor access and more lessons and guidance.

  • 2023

    In the wake of the pandemic the design industry saw a massive change, the introduction of remote working gave everyone a sense of fresh beginnings and the desire to focus on their goals. Briefbox got busier and busier and the need for higher quality mentoring and an affordable step-by-step course with structured learning only grew stronger.

  • 2024

    Today, we're thrilled to have launched the first Briefbox design course as an affordable 8 week bootcamp. We also made our brief library 100% free again and we launched our 1:2:1 mentoring products for those looking for personalised tuition. Want to learn more about our course or mentoring? Meet the team

Meet the team

Joel Rosen

Founder & Design Instructor

Joel is the Co-founder and Creator of Briefbox. Alongside adding fresh new briefs, resources and producing the bootcamp curriculum, Joel is also the Founding partner of UK based design agency, ORCA. He previously led his own awesome creative team on large scale brand and digital projects before going full time as a mentor offering design education to Briefbox students.

Flavia Mayer

Design Instructor

Flavia is a highly talented designer and illustrator, passionate about bespoke patterns, custom lettering and hand made, authentic textures. Flavia runs her own illustration studio and is also lead visual designer at the video editing app; Biteable. Flavia heads up community support at Briefbox by giving students honest feedback on their progress with actionable tips and tricks to improve their skill sets.

Matt Campbell

Design Instructor

Matt is Senior Designer at UK agency Noughts & Ones, helping planet-conscious brands sell products in the right way. With previous experience mentoring for industry respected; D&AD awards - Matt doesn't hold back when it comes to giving critique to students. You can find Matt connecting with students in our community platform and also offering regular Figma lessons (his speciality)

Emily Pryor

Community / Operations Director

Emily has a background in marketing and operations and helps to keep the Briefbox membership and course running smoothly for our students. With a passion for organisation and a love for people in general, Emily's role is essential to keep our community happy whilst ensuring our operations as a whole are ticking over smoothly.
