For this task, I decided to choose a landmark that I see every day - The Spire. I also challenged myself to produce this illustration within a two hour time limit. Part of what made this landmark challenging to illustrate, is that the Spire doesn't have the kind of iconic details that you'd associate with more well known places, like the Statute of Liberty.
However, what makes the Spire so striking is the contrast between it and it's surroundings. Amongst Dublin's old stone buildings, it's slick, modern exterior stands out. It's a landmark that is iconic in context, rather than as an object in and of itself.
I went for a clean, colourful style, with simple lines, to illustrate the minimalist elegance of the Spire. If I were doing this again, I would given greater consideration to the use of typography on this illustration. I feel a possibly played it a little too safe here. Regardless, this was an interesting challenge to work on.
