With this brief I aimed to be as minimal and simple as possible with the textual information so as not to overwhelm the reader.
I chose a slab serif font for the headings (Roboto Slab), in line with the River Cottage brand. I also used a grainy texture overlay on the logo.
For the body font, I chose Montserrat as it pairs nicely with Roboto Slab as well as being easy to read, pleasing to look at, and light and modern.
Colour-wise, I chose to work in greyscale so that the colour palette is minimal in accordance with the client's brief. This also gives them the option to print the greyscale designs on coloured paper stock to add a bit of variety and interest.
I chose to add some vintage style illustrations to liven the menu up and frame the rest of the design - these are old royalty-free images from historic archives. I feel this adds a lovely traditional feel, and the reference to nature (the plants)/ agriculture (the cow) is a nod to the organic, fresh, high quality food on which the restaurant prides itself. The illustrations have been reduced in opacity to 30% so as not to be too intense.
Feedback always appreciated! :)
