Designing record sleeves, albu,m artwork and creating illustrations for bands and DJ’s is an awesome way to get your foot in the door, make some connections and get your work in front of the right people. It's also a great way to get a variety of work into your portfolio. There are plenty of mock-up templates you could use once the artwork is complete; this will add authenticity, and give viewers an idea of how the artwork will look once printed.
To give this brief a real direction, and to help you improve your methods of working with a client, offer your skills to a band, DJ or producer you know or really like; start out with some initial concepts or ideas to get them excited. If they like your direction and want to take things further you could end up completing the full album artwork including the front cover, back cover, spine and tray artwork.
If you are struggling to find a local band or artists to work with, why not choose an existing album you love and get creative re-designing it. These can be really fun projects to work on, and including them in your portfolio can help potential clients see the variety of your work.
Here is a selection of images by awesome designers to give you some creative fuel! Remember don't copy this directly, use them as inspiration only.
