Use this brief to push your UI design skills, obviously not having a set wireframe or copy outlined can make things tough for a designer, but… at the moment the client doesn’t know exactly what they want (often the case in this industry!). So, they are hoping a designer can get started by putting together some initial designs using mock content and then go from there; adding or taking away elements after they see the first design.

Customer dashboard design for a sandwich supplier

Project overview:

'Awesome Wraps', based in the South West of England, produce and supply packaged sandwiches, wraps and salad boxes to customers across England. They have a production warehouse and are capable of producing and delivering large quantities of sandwiches; ideal for larger companies. Some of their customers include airlines, universities and corporate offices; who don't produce their own food, and like the convenience of working with an external supplier.

At the moment, their existing customers have to log-in to a boring Excel document to select the products they want. 'Awesome Wraps' are looking for a designer to create a friendly, interactive dashboard-based App that their customers can use to choose products, top-up their account, and keep track of previous orders. 'Awesome Wraps' believe that a well-designed, easy-to-use dashboard will encourage their customers to buy more products.

The dashboard needs to be designed for both desktops and mobiles. Initially, they are looking for a designer to create the 'New Order' page and, also, the 'Previous Orders' page. The dashboard should include a menu panel down the left side, which should display their products, and a seven-day calendar that customers can use to indicate how many sandwiches they want on each day.

Deliverables required

  • Make order page

  • Order history page

  • Desktop & iPhone view

  • Mockup of responsive layouts

  • Remember if multiple deliverables are required you can add attachments to your submissions when you have completed the brief.

Timescales and deadlines

Around five days should be enough for this brief. As this is first stage of the project, and the client isn’t 100% sure of content, there will be lots of back-and-forths between them and client; this is totally normal. Be sure to plan for it!

Our approach

Here’s some initial ideas we put together for a desktop view:

We wanted to keep the design clean and minimal not using too many colours and have made sure all the key elements are clearly visible, here’s a zoom in of the calendar input section:

Things to avoid

Here's a few pointers of things to avoid whilst working on this project.

  • Try to keep the design as spacious and clear as possible, don't use any unnecessary graphics or elements that will distract the user from the key focus of the dashboard
  • Use colours wisely, you'll need to make sure that colour is only used for key call-to-actions and focus points rather than secondary call-to-actions or areas that are not as important.
